A scrum is a way of restarting the game. It’s purpose is to restart play quickly, safely and fairly after a minor infringement or a stoppage. They are often described as the engine room of rugby union, delivering a team’s primary power source. If a team is dominant in the scrum, it usually means they are well on their way to winning the match, because what happens in this area of the game affects so many other aspects of the match.
